VIDEO: Travel #25 – Nordstrand Ferry Trip – Farms in the sea!

Nordstrand is a peninsula off the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. The ferries and the “visitors” ships sail in the North Sea to the west. The entire area is just shifting sand banks with islands.

I see Nordstand actually as an island, because the only connection to the mainland is through a manmade dyke with a road and some sediment.  While the point may be moot, the place is quite special and more like an island.

The extraordinary aspect is the fact that there are farms that are basically small sea level islands with dykes and typically a single raised area of a few meters above sea level for the farm buildings and farmhouse.

Incredible place and it is peaceful.
